Dalabelos' kitchen is a vegetarian's delight. There are several dishes of organic vegetables cooked in virgin olive oil, wild herbs, salads with fragrant herbs and spices, all of them prepared in the traditional Cretan way that helps to good health, well-being and long life.
In addition, lovers of good meat dishes will be tempted to taste our meals, prepared with rabbit and chicken meat from our farm and neighboring livestock. Local wine and cheese, as well as fresh fish from Panormo - when the sea is calm - complete the world-wide famous Cretan diet.
During breakfast, served under the shade of the mulberry tree in the courtyard, like the rest of our meals, every sense is filled with delight:
* The sense of hearing enjoys the harmony of morning birds, cicadas and flocks far away,
* the sense of vision is delighted by the beauty and grandeur of the landscape, that stretches from the sea all the way to the plains and from the hills up to the mountains,
* the sense of smell is excited by the fragrance of jasmine, lemon blossom, basil, plowed earth, coffee and herbs.
* The sense of touch is awakened by the sea breeze that crosses the plains, caresses softly the skin, reanimates body and soul during hours of calmness,
* the sense of taste, by the freshly plucked fruit, the goat milk, the yogurt, the cheese, the honey, the jam, the olives, the herb tea and the eggs of the free-range hens.
The olive grove – Olive gathering
The harvesting of olives dates back to antiquity. We can observe it depicted on ancient vases, a collective activity carried out by the Cretans during winter with the same method to this day. Since olive trees are very sensitive to cold, rain and damp weather, harvesting is carried out in favorable conditions, on mild sunny winter days.
The olive is the most important agricultural product of the island, its pressing procedure gives out the precious olive oil, which is the basis of Cretan cooking.
Visit to the estate - (organic farming, animals) free of charge for the residents.
For guests the price is set at 15 Euros per person (4-15) and includes treats with refreshments, raki and other estate products and discussion of organic farming.
The Vineyard - The vine harvest
Grape picking is the most pleasant collective agricultural activity and takes place by the end of summer. This work is accompanied with songs and goes on as a feast that lasts throughout the pressing of grapes and ends by the time when barrels are filled with the grape must - the prize of a whole year's work at the vineyards.
The visitor of Dalabelos is welcome to partcipate in olive picking and vintage in order to experience the generosity of Cretan land and the bond of the people to their land and its products.
The wine press
All activities associated with grapes are cause for celebration. The clay wine press built in the farm's courtyard is used to press grapes in order to extract the must. The grapes residue is left to ferment and in October it is transferred to the cauldron to be distilled and produce the famous Cretan raki, a "remedy” for body and soul.
Every Tuesday morning from 10 to 1 o'clock there is a collective cooking of traditional dishes. The first hour is spent in picking vegetables and herbs from the gardens.
50 Euros per person (Bread making + 2 Seasons dishes) (4-8
persons). The products that have been produced are incorporated into dinner-dinner free of charge.
Every Friday morning, those who wish may participate in the preparation of the oven, and in kneading and baking of bread.
A unique place in the Cretan culture and the musical tradition of Crete, hold its traditional musical instruments. The roots of some musical instruments in Crete are lost in the depths of the ages. In the archaeological excavations of Knossos and Phaistos, representations of sculptures, ceramics and painting are depicted by musicians and dancers who point to the present day, where the lyre plays in the middle and the dancers dance around it cyclically. The ancient Cretes used to play the ancient lyre, as shown by representations in frescoes and seals.
Presentation of folk musical instruments - by arrangement (probably every Thursday) depending on the flow of new arrivals - payment optional for residents. For guests the price is set at 15 Euro per person (4-15) and includes treats, refreshments, raki and other products of the estate and music.
Courses on wheel pottery and ceramics are taking place at the ceramics workshop of the estate.
Pottery Lab - 35 Euros per person (6-9 persons)
Evenings of traditional music are organized in the small stone amphitheater that adorns the central courtyard.
The estate provides visitors with mountain bikes for excursions to the surrounding area.
There are hiking excursions to the surrounding area. We may organise an excursion with 60 Euros per person (8-15 persons) with almost 5 hours hiking with a guide.
The path is a natural beauty, a stopover for rest and ends in the property for a meal included in the price. The period from July 1 to August 20 is not suitable for this activity due to high temperatures.
A spacious hall with a fireplace, a piano bar, a covered terrace opening to a magnificent view is available for collective activities and seminars.
