The Dalabelos Estate gastronomic experience is all about tasting local cuisine whilst participating in activities closely related to the culture of crete, and the national identity of the products.

Over 80% of products used in Dalabelos kitchen are produced on our own farm. We pick up our finest ingredients ranging from vegetables, herbs, snails, olive oil, local cheese and marmelades and invite our guests to a real gastronomic experience.

For meat lovers, we offer sheep, lambs and rabbits – all locally-bred.

Vegetables & Herbs

The Dalabelos farming tours and activites are tightely connected to gastronomy and well being. Our guests have the chance to walk around the farm, pick up wild greens and vegetables which are used in our kitchen. Guests also collect herbs which are used in different forms of tea and beverages. Thyme, sage, throubi are among the herbs widely available on our farm. All herbs are dried and used in drink preparation.

Among other herbs, Cistus creticus is a special herb growing in Crete – also called Cistus ladanopherum or Ladanum.

Olive Oil & Molasses

Our olive oil is produced from our farm olives and is 100% certified. We also make molasses, a super food made of grape syrup.

Marmelades & Jams

Over 10 home-made marmalades are produced in small quantities on Dalabelos Estate. Depending on the time of the season which determines which flavour is on the table – our guest have the chance to taste our fruit jellies at their breakfast daily.

Some of our favorite jams and marmalades are made of orange, lemon, tangerine and figs. Lucky guests have also tried our loquat marmalade – a flavour someone cannot easily try anywhere else.

Cooking Classes in Dalabelos

Every Saturday, Dalabelos guests can participate in our cooking classes. A unique experience of authentic Cretan gastronomy, preparation of lunch and dinner, making of dough related products such as the famous Greek pies.

Last but not least, the Culinary Crete workshop takes place on Dalabelos Estate every summer and lasts for a whole week. A full week dedicated to local food and Cretan gastronomy.

Dalabelos among the “Slow Food” movement supporters in Greece

The “slow food” movement was first started by Carlo Petriniy and a group of activists in Italy during the 80’s.

Slow Food principles:

  • Good Food (food based on its naturalness, preserving full flavour, keeping quality and health) 
  • Clean Food (food produced with respect to the environment protecting the ecosystem and biodiversity during all stages of production all the way through) 
  • Fair Food (food produced with respect to human resources and fair compensation of all people involved)

Dalabelos Estate fully supports the philosophy of the slow food movement in Greece, as the gastronomic experience is also connected to the culinary traditions of our land and the cultural traditions of Crete.

Food is grown locally and cooked thoughtfully, with appreciation.

A perfect example of how Dalabelos applies the slow food philosophy to their own is the Friday meal.  Our guests have the opportunity to taste our organically grown meat by our local farmers, slowly cooked in our wooden oven for over 2 hours together with potatoes and lima beans from our farm, listening to local Cretan music.

 

 

HUMAN RELATIONS

During breakfast, lunch and dinner, during coffee time and while serving rounds of raki, people of different nationalities have the chance to enjoy a dialogue between cultures. Interesting information is exchanged, such as the condition of the roads to remote beaches, the beauty of a place hidden in the mountains or the unexpected discovery of a rare plant.

The personel of Dalabelos is always there to answer all questions and to offer helpful tips for an enjoyable stay. They likewise give interesting information about the protection of the environment and the appreciation of Cretan society, which can only be fully understood by getting to know Crete’s history and mythology.
